Rory McIlroy finds himself a distant second-favourite to win this week’s US Open. Scottie Scheffler, fresh from his win at the Memorial Tournament, his fifth PGA Tour victory of the season, is the overwhelming favourite with William Hill to triumph at Pinehurst.

Masters champion Scheffler secured his latest PGA Tour triumph on Sunday and comes into Thursday’s first round in North Carolina at 3/1, streets ahead of second-favourite Rory McIlroy at 11/1. Scheffler heads the market for the third major of the year at the bookmaker’s shortest price since Tiger Woods, who was 2/1 to win the US Open in 2009, eventually finishing tied sixth behind surprise winner Lucas Glover.

Since Wyndham Clark lifted last year’s US Open, Scheffler’s odds have come in from 8/1, with Bryson DeChambeau also a market mover from 40/1 into 18/1. Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said : “Scottie Scheffler reasserted his dominance in the world of golf with another win at the Memorial last week and he’s now 3/1 to scoop a third major title.

“Not since the Tiger Woods era of the 2000s have we seen a price on this scale and it’s hard to look beyond the outright favourite. Despite raking in the highest percentage of bets, Rory McIlroy has stayed a steady price of 11/1, with PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele (12/1) and Collin Morikawa (14/1) also in contention.”

2024 US Open Championship odds: Scottie Scheffler 3/1; Rory McIlroy 11/1; Xander Schauffele 12/1; Collin Morikawa 14/1; Viktor Hovland 18/1; Bryson DeChambeau 18/1 Ludvig Aberg 18/1; BAR 20/1
