Open favourite Rory McIlroy suffered a nightmare start in his bid to win the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush with a first round 79.

Northern Ireland's big hope for a home winner could hardly have begun in worse fashion after hitting his tee shot out of bounds, on the way to a quadruple-bogey to get going.

Two holes later there was another dropped shot before what looked like a small recovery began, with birdies on seven and nine before taking the turn. There was a look a birdie too on the tenth, which went amiss.

From there an embarrassing double bogey came on 16 when a lack of concertration lead to missing a short bogey putt before a triple-bogey on the 18th rounded off a horrible day.
