In a surprising turn of events just days out from the US Open, Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll have shelved plans to divorce after appearing to mend their previously rocky marriage.

Despite initiating divorce proceedings last month, just prior to the PGA Championship, McIlroy and Stoll have had a change of heart. The Guardian reports that after careful thought, the couple has decided to give their marriage another shot.

This decision comes after seven years of marriage, during which there was much speculation about an imminent split.

McIlroy himself shed some light on their current relationship status in an interview with the Guardian.

He said: "There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool's game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together.

"Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning."

McIlroy and Stoll exchanged vows in 2017 and are parents to three-year-old daughter Poppy. Following her husband's filing of legal papers, Stoll, who is 36, had the standard 20-day period in Florida to submit her response.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Stoll missed this deadline, which passed on Sunday.

The recent reunion between McIlroy and Stoll marks a significant turn in their relationship, following a period of uncertainty and speculation. US Weekly had previously reported that Stoll felt isolated in her relationship, echoing the reasons McIlory ended his previous relationship with tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki.

Rumours of new romantic interests, particularly CBS Sports golf reporter Amanda Balionis, added to the intrigue. Balionis, who notably stopped wearing her wedding ring around the same time McIlroy announced his divorce, sparked speculation due to her friendly rapport with the golfer during interviews, reports the Mirror.

Despite reports from US Weekly confirming that the relationship between the two was strictly professional and friendly, a surge of their interviews circulating online sparked mass speculation among fans.
