Rosario Dawson is somehow finding time in her schedule to take on another huge comic book franchise.

The 38-year-old actress is in talks to join the cast of 20th Century Fox's X-Men Cinematic Universe as a key character in the upcoming New Mutants, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

If the deal is signed, Rosario's character Dr Cecilia Reyes - a mutant capable of generating energy fields - will serve as the mentor figure to this group of teenage would-be heroes.

Dawson recently voiced Batgirl in DC Entertainment's The Lego Batman Movie, and is a major figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Netflix spinoff series as the nurse-turned-vigilante Claire Temple.

Claire has come to the aid of New York's street-level heroes in Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and will work with all four again in Netflix's The Defenders later in the year.

Her comic experience also extends to starring in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's Sin City and she even co-created her own graphic novel Occult Crimes Taskforce.

Dr Cecilia Reyes in New Mutants would fulfil a role traditionally played by Professor Xavier in the comics. Earlier this year, it was reported that James McAvoy wouldn't reprise his role as Professor X.

In terms of what we can expect from the films, The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone has hinted that his adaptation of New Mutants will tip more towards the horror genre than traditional superhero blockbusters.

Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy have already landed the roles of Wolfsbane and Magik respectively, with more casting announcements expected soon.

X-Men: New Mutants is expected to hit cinemas in the spring of 2018.
