Rose McGowan has accused Oprah Winfrey of being “as fake as they come” in a Twitter rant.

The 47-year-old actress and #MeToo activist posted a 2014 picture of the chat show host kissing Harvey Weinstein tenderly on the cheek.

Oprah has previously said she was “friendly with Harvey” but, referring to his sex abuse, emphasised she “didn’t know any of this was going on”.

McGowan wrote in the tweet posted on Sunday: “I am glad more are seeing the ugly truth of @Oprah. I wish she were real, but she isn’t.

“From being pals with Weinstein to abandoning & destroying Russell Simmon’s [sic] victims, she is about supporting a sick power structure for personal gain, she is as fake as they come #Lizard.”

Oprah announced, at the start of the year, she was going to “step aside” as executive producer of #MeToo documentary on music mogul Russell Simmons, On the Record.

The 67-year-old claimed she felt “there is more work to be done on the film to illuminate the full scope of what the victims endured, and it has become clear that the filmmakers and I are not aligned in that creative vision”.

She said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter at the time: “I want it to be known that I unequivocally believe and support the women. Their stories deserve to be told and heard.”

Oprah has previously said, in an interview with CBS about the #MeToo movement: “I’m always trying to look for the rainbow in the cloud, whatever is the silver lining. And this is what I do know for sure: Something this major happens, when you have the fallout, 50 women coming forward, that it’s a watershed moment.”

“Everybody has a story and so I think this is a watershed moment. If we make this just about Harvey Weinstein, then we will have lost this moment,” she continued, “Everybody has a story...If we make this just about Harvey Weinstein, then we will have lost this moment.”

Oprah starred in a 2013 film called The Butler, which was distributed by Weinstein’s former company. She said in an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow: “Was I friendly with Harvey? Yes, I was friendly with Harvey. Was I in association with Harvey for the ‘Butler’ movie? Yes, but of course I didn’t know any of this was going on.”
