Rose McGowan accuses Prince Andrew of 'outrageous privilege' in wake of BBC Newsnight interview

Actress Rose McGowan has slammed Prince Andrew for what she has called his "outrageous privilege".

The American film star and #MeToo campaigner said she did not believe the Duke of York's interview on BBC Newsnight was "truthful" and it said it showed his lack of "empathy".

Speaking to BBC's Victoria Derbyshire, McGowan added her voice to calls for Andrew to provide a statement to the US authorities about his friend Jeffrey Epstein.

Since the interview aired on Saturday, a number of Epstein's alleged victims and their lawyers have made public pleas to the duke to aid the FBI in their enquiries.

McGowan, who has accused Harvey Weinstein of rape, said she was filled with "shock and dismay but also disbelief" when watching the footage of Andrew being questioned by journalist Emily Maitlis.

"In my opinion, it is not a truthful interview and it is also certainly not the mark of someone who is an empathetic character who cares about victims anyway," she said.

Asked about Andrew's denial of having sex with the then teenager Virginia Roberts because he was at a Pizza Express at the time, McGowan said: "To that I would say, I believe Pizza Express closes fairly early so there's enough time to get to a nightclub called Tramps."

"It's privilege to ve a man in that kind of world and just have so many people doing everything for you that you see nothing wrong with whatever your actions are those people who are your friends."

Derbyshire pointed out that Andrew had said people acted different around him which is why he did not notice anything suspicious. To which, McGowan shrugged disbelievingly.

Speaking on how she imagines the alleged victims of Epstein to be feeling McGowan said the Newsnight interview may have made them feel "invalidated".

She said: "Anytime you see someone whitewashing the truth it does horrible things to you. It makes you feel invalidated, makes you feel like you don't exist and nobody's listening to you.

"So, I can imagine those poor women watching are just feeling sick to their stomachs, as I was on their behalf.

"I definitely think they've been ignored in this process. It's easy to go for the PR angle, it's easy to go for Pizza Express and sweating and things like that but I do wish a lot more in the interview had been asked about the victims.

"We can't forget there's human tragedy behind this. This isn't just a joke about two creepy older men.

"There's serious pain in this story."

Asked whether she thought Andrew should voluntarily travel to the US and submit to the authorities, McGowan said: "I think, as he said, it would be the 'honourable' thing to do."

The British Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell is the latest senior figure to back the calls by McGowan and others for Andrew to go on the record with the police.

Mr McDonnell said the Duke of York should "make sure justice is served".

The Duke has been dealing with the continued fallout since the interview, describes as a "car crash".

Organisations involved in his projects and business interests have began distancing themselves from the Prince.

He has also come under fire since a former Downing Street aide, Rohan Silva, claimed Andrew used the 'N-word' during a meeting at Buckingham Palace in 2012.

Senior government colleagues of Silva's and a former Home Secretary have also claimed they were aware of Andre's alleged offensive language.

Ex-cabinet minister Jacqui Smith has accused the Prince of making offensive remarks about Arabs.

Andrew and the Palace have strongly denied all the claims.
