Ross Barkley has made it clear he wants to play in the Premier League and Europe, amid suggestions he has spoken to Aston Villa about a summer transfer.

And the midfielder’s twin desire could give Villa an advantage over Manchester United, who are also said to be interested in him, because Unai Emery’s side will be in the Champions League next season while the Red Devils may miss out on Europe if they don’t win the FA Cup. United face champions Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday and would enter the Europa League with victory over Pep Guardiola’s side.

Barkley has just suffered relegation from the Premier League with Luton Town, having joined the Hatters last summer. Speaking about his future only last month as he fought to help them stay in the top flight, he told Sky Sports: “I want to play in the Premier League. I want to play in Europe again but I'm not really focused on that now.

“I want to help the club stay in the league. I love the club. It's helped me so much and I owe them a lot.

"So I'm focused on that and thinking about nothing other than helping them do that. I feel like for the next three years maybe I'll still be in my prime years.”
