Ex-EastEnders star Ross Kemp has opened up about a diving incident which left him "too scared to go to sleep".

Speaking to Metro about the second season of his show Deep Sea Treasure Hunter, Kemp recalled a life-threatening incident that happened while diving, which had left him feeling shaken up.

He explained that while filming off of the Plymouth coast he and archaeologist Mallory Haas discovered a lead triangle, which indicated that they had found a shipwreck.

However, in their attempts to dig up the discovery, the pair didn't realise the extra effort had caused their masks to fill-up with dangerous levels of with CO2.

"Had we not been so excited we could have just flushed our masks and maybe got rid of the CO2," the actor explained.

"We started breathing it in and you’re just not aware of it. It’s not like you're breathing in a car exhaust: you can’t see it and you can’t smell it because it’s your own CO2. So Mallory blacked out slightly first and then I sort of blacked out for a second."

Kemp went on to add that while the dive specialists were able to help the pair get back to the surface safely, the incident left him feeling shaken-up.

"I felt like I had a really bad headache and I felt out of it – like I’d had too much to drink," he said, adding that his lungs felt like "Christmas trees" due to oxygen starvation.

He then revealed that he had been "too scared to go to sleep" after the incident and had asked the crew to ring him every hour to make sure he was okay.

Despite the ordeal, Kemp said he was "absolutely fine."

"You’re working in a hostile environment things are gonna go wrong because that’s the way it is and that’s why you do such exhaustive training," he said.
