John Holden

John Holden, aged 84, passed away after a short illness on Monday, October 21 at his care home in Harrogate.

John was the beloved husband to the late Margaret Holden (Stansfield), father to Stuart, Phillip and Suzanne.

Grandfather to Robert, Emily, Joshua, Toby and Natasha.

John was born in Bacup and spent most of his life living in Stacksteads and then Rawtenstall before moving to Knaresborough to be close to family.

John started his working life at S. S. Stott’s Ltd then Baltic mill in Waterfoot and finished off at Perplas, Bacup.

He was a keen rambler, member of the ramblers association and Pennine Paths.

He was also a gardener, member of the local alpine flowers society and a lifelong Burnley Football supporter.

John spent a number of years in the eighties volunteering as a Special Constable with Lancashire Constabulary.

He will be sadly missed.

Nora Yeomans, of Haslingden, passed peacefully at Acer Lodge Care Home on November 12, aged 87.

A loving wife of the late Allan and loving mother to Allan, David and Colin, mother-in-law-to Helen, Emma and Jo, grandmother of Sarah, Lewis, Francesca, Benjamin, Oscar and William, great grandmother of Nieve and Freddie.

She worked at Prinny Hill Footwear where she met Allan who she married in 1960.

She enjoyed attending ladies groups and volunteered with recording for the blind.

She was a keen swimmer and swam for Haslingden.

Her funeral will be held at St Mary’s RC Church on Wednesday, November 27 at 10am.

Donations in Nora’s memory are welcomed for Rossendale Hospice.

Mrs Shirley Smith ,of Millstream Lodge, Greave Clough Drive, Bacup, died peacefully at home on Monday, November 11, aged 91 years.

A service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church, Bacup on Thursday, November 28 at 12.30pm followed by a cremation at Burnley Crematorium at 1.45pm conducted by Rev. David Bartram.

Born in Denby Dale, Yorkshire, she moved to Shipley, then Solihull and then Sunninghill, near Ascot, before finally moving to Bacup in 1981 where she lived the rest of her life. She volunteered for Cancer Research UK at Nelson for over 30 years, then at Bank Street in Rawtenstall. She also worked for the RSPCA in Bacup and the NSPCC.

She enjoyed walking, swimming, reading, yoga and playing bridge at Bacup Golf Club where she was a long standing member.

She enjoyed travelling and had visited the West Indies, Hong Kong and Singapore, Egypt, South Africa and most of Europe.

She also enjoyed many years of family holidays in Southern Spain where she and her late husband had a second home.

Wife of the late Donald and Mother to the late Andrew, she leaves her daughter Heather, son-in-law, Mark, grandchildren Henry, Matthew and Oliver and many friends.

Michael Joseph Keyes passed away peacefully at the Royal Blackburn Hospital on November 13, aged 74.

A much loved and fun-loving husband to Sue; loving father of Marie, Beverley, Michael, Joanne, Lyndsey, Sean and Darren, and a much loved grandad and great grandad.

Michael also leaves many siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews in Ireland and the Isle of Wight. Michael was born in Mountrath and eventually settled in Haslingden in 1999 where he married Sue and became a brilliant father to Sue’s children Lyndsey, Sean and Darren.

Micael was employed at CED Fabrications in Accrington for 22 years as a delivery driver.

He was an avid supporter of Manchester United and loved watching them at the Black Bull and Haslingden Bowling Club.

He will be sorely missed by his many family and friends.

Michael was fondly known for his great sense of humour and devotion to his family.

He and Sue enjoyed regular holidays to Benidorm and trips to Ireland and the Isle of Wight.

Michael’s funeral will take place at Accrington Crematorium on Monday, November 25 at 1pm.

Allen Wheatley, of Lowe View, Waterfoot, passed away on November 10 at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, aged 88 years.

Allen was born in Stepney, East London in 1936.

When war broke out, Allen aged three and his elder brother Arthur were evacuated from London to Northampton.

They remained their into their adult life.

Allen started work as a model last maker for the footwear industry in Kettering.

It was then on a holiday with his mates to Blackpool, he met Joan who, from Durham was also on holiday with her friends.

Following a long distance courtship they married in 1959.

A few years later they moved due to Allen’s job and came to Waterfoot in 1966.

Where he continued as a model last maker in Whitewell Bottom.

Allen was a keen gardener and in his spare time was always in his garden.

Allen leaves behind his wife of 65 years Joan, daughter Anita and her husband Carl, son Paul and his wife Tracey, grandchildren Jenna and her husband Graham, Jack and his finance Ci, Lucy and her fiancé Anton, great-grandchildren Luca and Orla.

The funeral will be held on Friday, November 29. The details are: 11.45am at Fred Hamers, 12.15pm at St Peters RC Church, Newchurch, 1.45pm Burnley Crematorium, then followed by a wake at The Rose and Bowl in Stacksteads. Family flowers only please. Donations in Allen’s memory are welcome for Derian House Children’s Hospice.
