Douglas Hardman

Douglas Hardman, of Heightside Villas, Todmorden Road, Bacup, passed away on October 11, aged 89 years.

Douglas was a NHS Ambulance Technician at Stacksteads, Bacup.

His interests included art - painting, drawing, gardening, holidays (many of!) and jigsaws.

He was formerly a member of Stacksteads Band - played cornet.

Beloved husband to Kathleen, father to the late Paul and the late Raymond, also father to Andrew, Christ and Julie, and step-father to Karen and Robert, a much loved grandad and great-grandad.

A service will be held on Thursday, October 31 at 12.45pm at Knight and Boys, Stackstads conducted by Kathy Unsworth, 1.45pm at Burnley Crematorium and 3pm at Bacup Cricket Club.

Flowers welcome, donations to North West Air Ambulance.

Val Smithson, age 75, born and lived in Haslingden with her beloved husband Barry.

Val died unexpectedly Wednesday, October 17, with Barry and Kate, her daughter, by her side.

A local family lady who reached her 50th wedding anniversary this year with Barry.

Val leaves her immediate family, husband Barry, daughter Kate, son in law Lee and grandson Will.

Her niece Gillian and her family Anthony and Brodie who all loved her like a second mum and grandma.

Val also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews and all those that called her aunty Val.

Most of Val’s working life was spent in the textile and construction industry both in finance and contract management positions.

Val and Barry had many successes in showing their ponies over the years.

They had a love for the farming community, flying pigeons, showing chickens and rabbits.

Val loved her beloved terriers Meg and Rosie and her stunning cottage garden where she’d enter competitions with her Gladioli.

She was an avid Blackburn Rovers FC and Leigh Rugby League supporter.

Val was known for her warm smile, welcoming heart and a keen, genuine interest in others and loved by all.

The funeral will be held at St James Church, Haslingden at 12pm Tuesday, October 29, followed by a burial at Haslingden Grane Cemetery.

Flowers welcome, she adored flowers.

We’ll be using Buds to Blooms in Haslingden.

Alternatively donations will be welcomed to ‘Friends of Haslingden cemetery’ and may be made via the funeral director Georgina Ormrod for Johnson, Durning & Woods, 8 Pleasant Street, Haslingden BB4 5LG.

David Pilkington of Heightside Avenue, Newchurch, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the Royal Blackburn Hospital on October 18, aged 83.

He worked for many years at JB Broadley and Reeds Holme Works from where he retired as works director.

David had many interests over the years including shooting, fishing, rock climbing and he loved his garden.

His latest past time was making beautiful handmade walking sticks and crooks.

He was an active member of Haslingden and District Fly Fishing Club and also Burnley Angling Club.

He leaves his wife Shirley, daughter Miranda and son-in-law Matt, his son Richard and daughter-in-law Anne.

Grandchildren Charlie, Henry, Harvey, Will and Nancy.

Also his niece Lindsay and her husband Kevin and not forgetting his beloved dog Becky.

A service will be held on Thursday, October 31 at St James Church Haslingden at 12.15pm followed by a committal at Accrington Crematorium.
