Gunners from Plymouth's branch of the Royal Artillery Association enjoyed a tour of the world famous Plymouth Gin Distillery - the oldest gin distillery in England.

The gunners, often found collecting for charities, dedicated this day instead to the appreciation of one of the world's 'cleanest' drinks. Gin has been produced in Plymouth since 1793 and one of its most loyal customers has been the Royal Navy.

To this day the Navy enjoys a glass or three of the distillery's Navy Strength special gin which has 17% more alcohol by volume than the more regular offering.

Tour manager Pippa Robinson demonstrated encyclopaedic knowledge in a warm and humorous manner drawing the whole of the party into her stories and fables of Plymouth's past, a skill only exceeded by her knowledge of how to get the best out of the much loved libation.

What amazed the gunners was just how much of the spirit could be produced by such a small workforce, a true inspirational example of British tenacity and grit.

The Plymouth Gin Distillery has had its share of bad times as economies shifted and belts were tightened, but like a phoenix, the brand has taken to the skies once more to retain its position as one of the world's leading names in alcohol products.

As for the gunners, the reaction was universally strong, "a cracking good day out, which I am happy to repeat" said Jerry Josee, the long serving artillery commando.

"Not without me" added his wife Geri. "I will never again take my G&T for granted", added Andy Tattersall, again another artillery commando. "I never did" chirped in Tony Triscott, a long serving gunner "I always take mine in a very large glass".

Branch member Malcolm Bassett-Smith said: "I love the enthusiasm and lively buzz of the distillery. Everybody is keen to show off a genuine smile and share a laugh with visitors. As for the product, it stands up on its own without any help from me."

Kevin Langshaw, branch chairman, added: "This is a great example of not appreciating what is on your doorstep. I would be more than happy to bring visiting family here on a day out. It isn't just highly interesting, but it's a fun day out with a celebratory drink to round it off."

Pippa spoke highly of the gunners. She said: "I have pride in every one of those men, they have served us over the years and they still serve us today it's good to toast their contribution in our little way."
