Royal baby name odds: What will the Duchess of Cambridge's third child be called?

Speculation was mounting today over the name the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will choose for their third child.

Arthur remains the favourite name for the Royal Baby with most bookmakers slashing odds to 2/1 late on Monday and into Tuesday.

But bookmakers have also been taking bets on some unlikely names for Kate and William's new baby son including Thor, Leroy and Tyrone.

Odds for the fictional Avengers superhero Thor were at 250/1 with William Hill, while the odds on Leroy was at 500/1 on Betfair.

Tyrone was 300/1 with Coral.

But the favourite name for the baby prince of Cambridge is the more traditional Arthur, followed by James, Philip and Albert.

William and Kate introduced their third child to the world on Monday after he was born at 11.01am weighing 8lb 7oz.

His name has yet to be unveiled as Royals traditionally keep the public guessing before revealing their choice.

William and Kate will want to share the name with the Queen and the rest of their family before making it public.

Kensington Palace said the name would be announced in "due course" but odds have been slashed to 2/1 on Arthur on several betting websites.

According to Betfair, the odds of the prince being Philip are 4/1 while James was at 5/1 and Albert at 11/2.

The betting site is also taking bets on other outsider contenders including Wayne, which was at 500/1.

William Hill on the other hand had James at 4/1 followed by Philip and Albert.

The odds of the new baby being named after his grandfather Prince Charles was at 25/1 on the site.

Born fifth in line, the baby is the Queen and Philip's sixth great-grandchild and Kensington Palace said the couple, along with the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, and the Middletons, were delighted with the news of the new arrival.

George, 4, and Charlotte, 2, visited their new sibling at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, on Monday afternoon.

A confident, excited Charlotte, who turns three on May 2, turned to wave at the photographers outside the hospital as she led the way up the steps holding William's hand.

Four-year-old George, in his school uniform, appeared more wary of the huge crowds of media.

During his first photocall, the baby, who was wrapped in a white lace shawl with a matching bonnet, could be seen moving his fingers as he was cradled by Kate.

Smiling broadly, the duchess was dressed in a vibrant red Jenny Packham dress with a white lace collar, reminiscent of William's late mother Diana, Princess of Wales - who wore red and white outside the Lindo Wing after Prince Harry was born in 1984.

As William and Kate headed home after appearing in front of the banks of cameras with their seven-hour-old son, the duke said they were "very happy" and "very delighted".

He joked, holding up three fingers, that he had "thrice the worry now", adding: "We didn't keep you waiting too long this time."

Quizzed on whether they had decided on a name, the duke added: "You'll find out soon enough."

The duke and duchess thanked the hospital for their care and the public for their wishes.

Kensington Palace said: "Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have received.

"They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes."

By welcoming a baby prince, William and Kate are following the birth pattern of the Queen and Philip's children - a son, a daughter and then another son.

The Queen and the duke had Prince Charles, then Princess Anne, followed by, after a gap of 10 years, Prince Andrew, with a fourth child, Prince Edward, born four years later.
