Royal wedding: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reveal details about music for ceremony

Kensington Palace has unveiled details about the music that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have chosen for their wedding ceremony, which is due to take place at St George’s Chapel on May 19.

The music and individuals chosen to perform have been carefully selected by the couple, celebrating traditional service music and upcoming talent alike.

James Vivian, director of music at St George’s Chapel, will oversee all of the music on the day of the nuptials, supervising the choral groups, soloists and musicians that have all been asked to perform.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, a cellist and student at the Royal Academy of Music, was personally asked to perform by Ms Markle.

The 19-year-old, who won BBC Young Musician in 2016, previously performed in front of Prince Harry when he played at an event for the Halo Foundation charity in London last June.

“I’m so excited and honoured to perform at Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle’s wedding,” he said.

“I was bowled over when Ms Markle called me to ask if I would play during the ceremony, and of course I immediately said yes!”

The choir of St George’s Chapel, which was founded all the way back in 1348, will lend their vocal talents to the ceremony.

The Kingdom Choir, a gospel group that’s been led by conductor Karen Gibson for more than 20 years, has also been invited to perform during the service.

“The Kingdom Choir is truly honoured to be invited to sing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Ms Markle, and we’re very excited to be taking part in such a historic moment,” Ms Gibson said.

“It will be a moment that we will always treasure, and we’d like to take the opportunity to wish the couple all the very best for their coming union.”

The orchestra that will be playing as Ms Markle and Prince Harry prepare to exchange vows will be conducted by Christopher Warren-Green.

It will consist of musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia.

Soloists performing as part of the orchestra will include Elin Manahan Thomas, a well-known Welsh soprano; David Blackadder, a distinguished trumpeter; Luke Bond, organ player and assistant director of music at St George’s Chapel; and State Trumpeters hailing from the Band of the Household Cavalry.

The statement released by the royal family also revealed that further details about the music for the royal wedding will be released in due course.
