Despite the fact they wear tiaras and live in palaces, the royal family wants us to think of them as kind of down-to-earth. That's why they released two family portraits to celebrate Prince Charles' 70th birthday earlier this month; one of them all looking straight-laced and 'royal', and another of them all laughing.

Demure smiles:

Lols:

In the photograph of the family laughing, they're really going for it. Especially Meghan Markle, who's almost bent over double with the giggles. So what's so funny, you guys? C'mon, don't leave us out of the joke.

According to a source speaking to Us Weekly, we've all got the royal nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, to thank for the hilarity. Apparently, the nanny - who's been with the family since Prince George was just a few months old - started "making silly faces and waving to get their attention. Everyone burst into laughter at one point, making for a more relaxed photo," said the source.

And it worked, because even the three young children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - look tickled by Maria.

Apparently the photoshoot, by royal photographer Chris Jackson, lasted just 15 minutes when it took place back in early September. And despite being just four-and-a-half months old at the time, Prince Louis was reportedly "so well behaved," and is "the most adorable, placid little boy you will ever meet".

It's not the first time Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been photographed cracking up in an official capacity, either. In a picture taken on their wedding day (that was eventually sent out on the front of the Sussexes thank you cards), Meghan and Harry are visibly laughing at something.

Later, wedding photographer (and Polish prince, no less) Alexi Lubomirski, told the BBC exactly what it was that made the newlyweds giggle.

"I said 'just before you go in, sit on those stairs'. And she just slumped in-between his legs and there was this moment where they were just laughing because they were exhausted and thinking finally it's all over. It was one of these beautiful moments," he said.

The royal family: forever truly fulfilling the 'Live, Laugh, Love' mantra your most basic friend has plastered all over her bedroom walls.
