Forget Chelsea vs Manchester United taking over the EastEnders schedule tonight, it was all about Warwick vs Wolfson on tonight's (March 13) episode of University Challenge.

In the battle to end all intellectual battles, viewers saw series fan-favourites Sophie Rudd and Eric Monkman go head-to-head on their respective teams for a coveted place in the semi-finals.

As expected, the showdown between the two universities was epic in its proportions – making it all the more difficult for you lot at home to decide who to root for.

Whichever side you were backing, at least there's one thing we can all agree on: we won't see a battle like Rudd vs Monkman for a very, very long time. Until the finals, of course.

Alas, there could only have been one winner...

Securing their spot in the semi-final alongside Emmanuel and Edinburgh was Monkman and his team.

The team beat Warwick by 30 points with 205, despite a late surge by the Rudd et al – so Wolfson College, Cambridge were eventually declared triumphant by host Jeremy Paxman.

In what was a truly bittersweet moment, fans at home realised that while Wolfson's victory meant they'd get to see Monkman and Co live to see another day, it also meant saying goodbye to Rudd.

University Challenge airs on Mondays at 8pm on BBC Two.
