A gang left their victim with a punctured lung after he was repeatedly stabbed in Rugby. Police responded to 999 calls about a group of men chasing another man with weapons.

Warwickshire Police say officers found the victim – who was then 18-years-old and was unarmed – had suffered multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital where he had emergency surgery to repair a punctured lung.

A major investigation was launched into the incident, which took place in Clifton Road at around 4.40pm on July 31 2020. Extensive CCTV work led to officers identifying Alanzo Scarlett, Brian Ayamba Ashu, Cheetij Pun and Musa Hussain as those who had attacked the man.

Scarlett, aged 26, of Pershore Road, Birmingham; Ayamba Ashu, aged 25, of Phipps Avenue, Rugby; Pun, aged 23, of Morton Gardens, Rugby; and Hussain, aged 19, of Iris Avenue, Leicester, were all arrested, interviewed and subsequently charged.

All four appeared at Warwick Crown Court on Monday (September 23), where they pleaded guilty to violent disorder while Pun and Ashu also admitted section 20 assault. They are now due to be sentenced at the same court on October 29.

Speaking about the case, investigating officer, Detective Constable Kat Brock said it could have been very different. “Using a knife is never acceptable," DC Brock said. "The victim needed emergency surgery after the attack and was fortunate not to suffer more serious injuries as their actions could have resulted in the loss of a life.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the investigation for their dedication and commitment throughout. It has been a lengthy investigation but ultimately, one with the right outcome.”
