Popular kids show Rugrats is making a comeback with a new series and a live-action movie, it has been announced.

The 90s television show, which aired until 2004, followed tots Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, twins Phil and Lil DeVille and Angelica Pickles as they ran riot and wreaked havoc with the world around them.

Other characters included Susie, Kimi, Kira and Dil introduced over the episodes and also through the several films the programme spawned, The Rugrats Movie (1998) and Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (2000).

And on Monday, almost 28 years after the first episode aired, Nickelodeon confirmed plans for a 26-episode series bringing back the beloved characters.

Sarah Levy, COO, Viacom Media Networks; and Interim President, Nickelodeon, said: “Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures.

“What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”

Paramount Pictures also has the greenlight to produce a live-action CGI film, also starring the original cast and a bunch of new kids.

Station president Brian Robbins said: “Now feels like the ideal time to reintroduce this iconic cast of characters to a whole new generation of young fans.

“Kids who grew up with Tommy Pickles and the Rugrats crew will now be able to share that experience with their own children.”

The animated series, created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, spanned nine series and 172 episodes – including a variety of specials – before ending in 2004. The trio will serve as executive producers for the new order.

During its successful screen run, the show earned four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids’ Choice Awards and its very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
