A pair of young runaway emus have been found three miles from home after making a daring escape from their farm.

The two birds, aged just six months old, ruffled feathers when they decided to have a trip out on their own - an appeal was made to help find the pair on Sunday with the public warned not to approach them.

However, the daring duo thankfully only spent one night away from their pad at Gripps Farm, Brotton, before being found on Monday morning - November 11.

Kerys McAuley, from the farm, had been frantically searching for the feathered fugitives and went out driving again on Monday morning, before spotting the pair in a field about three miles away. She told Teesside Live: "We've caught one of them and are currently rounding up the other one. I'm just really pleased they are ok, they don't have any sign of injury at all."

The pair escaped from the farm byr jumping over a fence. The two flightless friends - who don't have names - were last spotted at Hunley Golf Club, in Brotton, at around 2pm, but by the time the owners got there there birds had vanished.

Kerys said, despite being about 5ft tall, the cute-faced flightless birds are in fact only babies of about six months old. She explained she doesn't even know if they are male or female yet, as to find out the sex of emus they will need to send a feather off for DNA analysis when they are a bit older.

She said: "We bought four of them after they hatched. I haven't given them names yet because they all look identical so it is hard to tell them apart."
