Runaway piglet hitches ride with police officers after escaping onto busy main road

This plucky piglet found himself hitching a ride with police after being rescued from a busy main road.

The animal literally had his bacon saved after escaping on to a main road in Coventry.

Police were called after vehicles were seen swerving to avoid the piglet in the Canley area of the city.

The officers managed to bundle him into the footwell of their squad car and take him to safety.

Footage of the incident shows the piglet inside the car trying to get into the seat.

One officer says: ""Hello, are you going to behave now? Wait, hold on. I'm going to wash my hands because you are a bit smelly."

He is then heard telling passers-by: "Say hello to my new partner, how cute is he? Its all on bodycam. Don't bite. Good boy."

PCs Gareth Williams and Simon Seaton, who attended the scene, named their porcine pal Oliver, after runaway orphan Oliver Twist.

He was later taken to the RSPCA in Allesley, Coventry, to be looked after and will now be rehomed with an experienced owner.

Inspector David Langston, of West Midlands Police, said: "Our officers often face a variety of incidents in the course of their duties and regularly deal with more than crime.

The officers who rescued Oliver, were subsequently dispatched to execute a European arrest warrant for a wanted man - no two jobs are the same, let alone no two days as the famous saying goes!”
