Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby: Who will be the royal baby’s godparents?

Who will be chosen as the godparents of Harry and Meghan's baby?

Royal family members traditionally have a larger than average set of godparents. For example, Prince Louis has six godparents, Princess Charlotte has five, and Prince George has seven.

Royals typically choose close friends for godparents instead of family members, which is why Prince Harry isn’t a godfather to his niece and nephews.

We’ve rounded up our top contenders from most likely (the Mulroneys) to least (we'd love to see Nick Jonas as a royal godfather, but we're realistic).

The inner circle: Jessica and Ben Mulroney

Jessica and Ben Mulroney are a top choice for godparents. Close friend Jessica has been styling Meghan for years and helped out during her royal tour of Australia. Her husband, Ben Mulroney, is the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, so the couple have a suitably powerful pedigree too.

The confidantes: Jake and Zoe Warren

Jake and Harry went to school at Eton together and Jake's two-year-old daughter Zalie was the youngest bridesmaid at the royal wedding. Jake was also one of Princess Diana’s 17 godchildren, so asking the couple would be a nice way to carry on the tradition.

The power couple: Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian

It’s a little less likely that Serena Williams will be chosen as a godmother, but Meghan is still very close to the tennis pro. The pair became friendly in 2014 and Serena said she and Meghan have been leaning on each other emotionally since the royal wedding. The couples also had a double date in May when they were spotted at Prince Harry’s polo match in Ascot. The Duchess of Sussex supported her friend again in October when she wore a blazer from the tennis pro’s collection during her Australia tour.

The old friends: Benita and Darren Litt

Benita is one of Meghan's oldest friends and her daughters, Rylan and Remi, were both bridesmaids at the wedding. The Duchess of Sussex is godmother to both children, so it wouldn’t be unexpected if she chose the couple.

The family friends: Major Nicholas van Cutsem and Alice van Cutsem

Unsurprisingly, Prince Harry is a popular choice as a godfather. He’s godfather to Florence van Cutsem, who was a bridesmaid at his wedding. Nicholas van Cutsem is also one of Prince Louis godparents, as he’s close friends with both brothers. If their surname sounds familiar, it might be because Grace van Cutsem is best known for being the “grumpy bridesmaid” meme at the 2011 royal wedding.

The cousins: Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

Although it’s typically unusual for royals to choose family members as godparents, royal commentator Andrea Boehlke has a feeling Princess Eugenie stands a pretty good chance. Prince Harry’s cousin, who last year married Casamigos ambassador Jack Brooksbank, could be a top contendor.

Boehlke told Express, “Perhaps Princess Eugenie again. They are very close. She lives in Kensington Palace, very close to [Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

The college friend: Lindsay Roth

Meghan has been best friends with Lindsay Jill Roth since they met while attending Northwestern University in Chicago. In the days before the Duchess deleted The Tig and her Instagram, they posted plenty of photos together, going to New York Fashion Week and watching the US Open and hockey games together. They traveled to Greece and St Barts, documenting their vacations on Instagram. Meghan was the maid of honor at her wedding and Lindsay reportedly based one of the characters in her book What Pretty Girls Are Made Of on her college friend.

The cool creative: Markus Anderson

Meghan has been close friends with Soho House creative Markus Anderson since her time in Canada. He was most recently spotted accompanying her around New York when she visited the city for her baby shower. While it's unlikely she would choose such an out of the box option, it would guarantee that her children have lifelong memberships to Soho House

Boehlke also thought that Misha Nonoo, a British fashion designer, could be on the shortlist for royal godparent. The award-winning designer and Meghan Markle have been friends for a while (she shared a snap of the Duchess in 2015 on Instagram) and she's said to be the person responsible for Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship in the first place.

In 2017 Misha told the Evening Standard that she and Meghan met in Miami. “We were seated next to one another at a lunch and we got along like a house on fire. She has the most remarkable and generous spirit" she said. "I aspire to be as philanthropic as she is, and to have as much of an impact as her.”

Misha has ties to other members of the Royal Family, as her ex-husband Alexander Gilkes is said to be one of Prince Harry's close friends from Eton. She's also often pictured on trips with her friends Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. Misha as a godmother would guarantee a suitably chic Royal baby.

The wildcards: Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra

While the Jonas Brother hasn't been ruled out completely it's looking less likely every day. Prince Harry and Meghan were unable to attend the actress and pop singer’s wedding in India. Still, we'd love to live in a world where Nick Jonas, formerly most famous for taking his top off and singing a cover of Busted's "Year 3000", is offering up advice and guidance to a member of the royal family.

The A Listers: George and Amal Clooney - now ruled out

Though the Clooneys are very friendly with Meghan and Harry - attending the royal wedding and hanging out with the couple in Italy - George has now nixed rumors that he's a royal baby godparent frontrunner.

Speaking to Australian magazine Who, George Clooney denied rumors that he was in the running. Asked by the magazine if he would get the call-up, he replied, "Oh yes, I'll be the godfather of the royals apparently." He clarified quickly, "No! I'm the father of twins, I have enough sh*t to deal with - literally!"
