Russell Brand has opened up about his mother Barbara's horrific hit-and-run incident last month, revealing she is making a "remarkable" recovery.
She was involved in a collision in Essex and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, leading Brand to cancel his entire ReBirth tour.
Speaking on Loose Women earlier today (May 16), the comedian revealed: "She'll be watching now. She had a terrible, terrible car crash. A head-on collision. Geezer in the other motor legged it.
"She had terrible, terrible injuries – broken back, broken neck, abdominal injuries. But she is making a remarkable recovery due to her spirit and the incredible National Health Service and the people that work there."
Opening up about his mother's previous battles with cancer, Brand continued: "She's had cancer six times, she only finished chemo a month before the crash. She still goes for regular checks. But she bounces right back. My mum wants to live, she's full of spirit.
"Obviously when someone you really, really love has something serious happen... like, I think in the past I'm lucky because I got a programme of recovery, and this means that if something serious happens, I have a little word with myself and I'm plugged into a support network, and I know what I mustn't do is act all selfish and self-centred.
"If something dramatic and awful happens in your life you can start to overly identify with it, you can make it your life as it were.
"But it didn't happen to me, it happened to my mum, so my job is be supportive, be present, be kind, be loving, recognise when you're in hospital and people working there have challenges. In the past, I had a tendency to be very, very self-centred."
Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV at 12.30pm.
