It could soon be possible to book a rail ticket from New York to Paris - and more ambitious travellers could even opt to drive the 13,000 mile trip.

The president of Russia’s rail network wants to build a huge road and rail bridge from Alaska to Siberia across the Bering Strait - joining two continents forever.

Vladimir Yakunin is currently trying to convince private companies to get on board - and to persuade China to support the plan.

Yakunin hopes to build a ‘mega-road’ which would run from America to Europe - extending for 6,200 miles through Russia, and backed up by a similar expansin of the rail network.

‘This is an inter-state, inter-civilisation, project,’ Yakunin said in an interview with The Siberian Times.

‘It should be an alternative to the current (neo-liberal) model, which has caused a systemic crisis. The project should be turned into a world 'future zone', and it must be based on leading, not catching, technologies.’
