Russians Evacuated From Border Region Amid Ukrainian Incursion

Russian authorities said evacuations were continuing in villages and towns near the Ukrainian border in Kursk region on Tuesday, August 13, seven days after Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack on the area.

Footage released on Monday by Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations shows buses arriving in the town of Dolgie Budy in Belovsky District to collect a number of civilians, including children and elderly people.

District officials on Monday described the situation as “very tense” and urged residents to board buses at evacuation points in Dolgie Budy or in the neighboring village of Bushmeno, a few miles east.

Residents of Belovsky District had previously been under a voluntary evacuation order, according to officials, but on Monday, Governor of Kursk Oblast Alexey Smirnov said a regional task force was working to evacuate the district entirely.

In a meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Smirnov said Ukrainian forces had penetrated about 12 kilometers into Kursk and occupied 28 settlements in Kursk region. Around 180,000 people were under evacuation orders in Kursk, Smirnov said.
