Ruthless Boehly expected to terminate Chelsea forward’s contract, with ‘frowned upon’ star already lining massive club up next
It’s been claimed ‘everything indicates’ a Chelsea forward will have his contract prematurely cancelled this summer, and a move to a European giant should quickly take shape.
The Blues are slowly beginning to turn their season around and not before time. Chelsea are unbeaten in their last three in the league and still retain faint hope of snatching fourth spot and Champions League qualification. To do so, they’ll need a favour or two from Tottenham, Newcastle, Liverpool and Brighton.
Elsewhere, Graham Potter guided his side into the quarter finals of the Champions League after overturning a one-goal deficit against Borussia Dortmund.
Their reward – if it can be called that – is a two-legged tie against reigning European champions Real Madrid who humbled Liverpool in the Round of 16.
Amid an influx of January signings, Potter is still searching for his best combinations across all areas of the pitch. However, one player he’s seemingly already determined isn’t for him is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The former Arsenal hitman, 33, was signed by Thomas Tuchel and quickly fell down the pecking order once the German was replaced.
Aubameyang was left out of Chelsea’s Champions League squad for the knockout rounds and has just a seven-minute cameo to his name in the Premier League over the last seven matches.
Aubameyang was recently spotted in the dressing room of former club Barcelona following their 2-1 victory over Real Madrid on Sunday.
Mundo Deportivo subsequently suggested Aubameyang may well return to the Camp Nou if a transfer agreement can be reached between Barca and Chelsea this summer. However, according to two reports, a transfer fee might not be required.
Aubameyang to get Ronaldo treatment?
Firstly, Goal describe Aubameyang’s trip to Barcelona as being ‘frowned upon’ back at Stamford Bridge.
Secondly, Spanish outlet Sport report ‘everything indicates that [Aubameyang] could be released this summer’. Given his contract doesn’t expire until the end of next season, that would mean Aubameyang’s contract is terminated.
If that route is taken, Sport suggest Aubameyang would love nothing more to re-join Xavi’s side. Aubameyang scored 13 goals in 23 appearances during a six-month spell with the club in 2022 and was popular in the dressing room.
In fact, it’s even claimed Aubameyang would be prepared to take a wage cut to give the move a nudge in the right direction.
Barcelona’s financial difficulties are well documented and a reduced pay packet, combined with being able to sign the striker as a free agent would greatly increase their chances of pulling off the coup.
Losing a player for nothing only one year after signing him for £10.3m can hardly be classified as good business by Chelsea. However, the mass influx of new signings in the last two windows makes a raft of exits a necessity.
Christopher Nkunku will add to the logjam in the forwards with his arrival from RB Leipzig already confirmed. What’s more, a new centre-forward is believed to be a priority for Todd Boehly this summer.
If it means creating room in the squad and shedding a high salary, cancelling Aubameyang’s contract may well be make sense for the Blues.
For as long as Potter remains in charge, Aubameyang is unlikely to feature all that regularly in the eleven. A premature exit and return to Barcelona could be in the best interests of all involved.
