Ryan Giggs To Sue Paper Over 'Phone Hacking'

Ferguson And Giggs Win Premier League Awards

Footballer Ryan Giggs has launched legal action against the News of the World over alleged phone hacking.

A spokesperson for law firm Schillings confirmed that Giggs has "issued proceedings" against the newspaper.

The company, which has acted for the Manchester United player in the past, made no other comments.

The News of the World said it would not comment.

Father-of-two Giggs, 37, has been at the centre of a media storm after Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming used parliamentary privilege to name him as the Premier League player who took out an injunction.

His decision to pursue legal action against the News of the World comes a week after actress Sienna Miller accepted £100,000 in compensation from the paper for having her phone hacked.

The tabloid still faces dozens more claims that it hacked the phones of celebrities, politicians, their families and colleagues.

Other alleged victims include actor Jude Law, interior designer Kelly Hoppen, Labour MP Chris Bryant, football agent Sky Andrew and player-turned-pundit Andy Gray.

The paper and its publishers have set aside £20m to pay off its victims.
