Ryan Murphy is known to take massive risks with his TV series and they've paid off – Nip/Tuck, Glee and American Horror Story to name just a few – and it seems like he's NEVER scared to dive in.

However, the big-time writer has admitted he does get fearful but has learned to embrace it, and now, he doesn't make anything unless it scares him a bit.

"One thing I always do is just tell actors that I'm as afraid as they are, because I can sense that and I feel it, too. I did that with Susan [Sarandon] when we were shooting Feud," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"She was signed on, but I constantly thought she was going to bail. I finally got her to admit that she was afraid of tackling it, and I said, 'Well, I'm afraid, too.'

"And from that came a communication of, 'OK, how can we make this better for you and a safer space?' And that's just what I try and do.

"And I am now at a point where I'm only interested in doing stuff that scares me because that's where the goodness comes from."

Feud is Murphy's latest TV story, which follows the scandalous Old Hollywood tale of Joan Crawford's (Jessica Lange) rivalry with Bette Davis (Sarandon).

The two stars were known to be arch-enemies at the height of their careers, but it was on the way down that circumstances brought them together to star in the kitschy horror classic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?.

Murphy is also currently working on a second season of Feud based around the fallout of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Feud will air on BBC Two later this year.
