Ryan Reynolds paused promotional work for his new Deadpool & Wolverine film to send a birthday message to Wrexham legend Mickey Thomas.

Reds stalwart Thomas turned 70 on Sunday, with Reynolds and fellow co-owner Rob McElhenney taking time out of their days to wish him many happy returns.

Thomas, whose status as a cult hero at the Racecourse ground was cemented many years ago, scored arguably Wrexham's most famous goal - a stunning free-kick in a FA Cup win over Arsenal in 1992.

He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2019 and began treatment and was later given the all clear. Earlier this year he wrote on social media: "Just received great news on my CT scan. All clear again no signs of the big C."

He added: "I will soon hit the five-year landmark of winning my battle. Thinking of all those people just starting on their personal journey. Keep positive - Keep Fighting."

Reynolds at the time reached out to Thomas, replying "congrats Mickey!!!!" to his update. The club's owners have now sent the Welshman personal messages, with Reynolds taking time out of his promotional tour of Europe to give Thomas his best.

Reynolds, dressed in his Deadpool costume, said: "This message is for Mickey Thomas. Mickey, it's Ryan. I know you know that I know who you are. Happy birthday, buddy.

"This town owes you a debt of gratitude. I owe you a debt of gratitude. You're a huge pillar in what is the Wrexham legacy. Tons of love.

"Happy birthday to you and your family, Mickey. Bye."

In a separate video McElhenney added: "Mickey! legend. Happy birthday, man. Happy 70th birthday. It's amazing. You look fantastic. See you soon."

Thomas won 51 caps for Wales.
