A US coffee chain popular in New York has put a planning application in to transform a prominent Birmingham New Street unit into a new cafe. The branch will be the first Blank Street Coffee shop in Birmingham if the application is approved.

Blank Street has a number of locations in New York, Boston and Washington DC as well as 30 branches in London and two in Manchester. It has requested to change the frontage of 80 New Street, which was a branch of Extrawurst before it closed at the beginning of 2023.

The coffee shop made headlines last week when Espresso singer Sabrina Carpenter visited a branch and photographs of her sipping coffee were posted on Instagram. It's known for its baked goods as well as iced drinks, cold brews, matcha and more.

The planning application shows an artists impression of how the corner store would look, with wooden panels and sage green and white checkerboard tiles. It also shows benches outside.

Before it became a branch of Extrawurst, 80 New Street was a Supercuts hair salon. The hot dog store opened in May 2022 and closed after less than a year.
