Tributes have been paid to a woman who died in a horror crash on a major road in Bolton yesterday afternoon.

Darwen Road in Bromley Cross was closed for several hours while police, fire, and ambulance services worked at the scene from 11.50am.

Police confirmed one woman has died, with the community in shock and people calling the road ‘dangerous’ due to people driving at high speeds.

Another man and woman are seriously injured.

Sergeant Phillip Collingwood of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This was an extremely tragic incident in which someone has lost their life and two others have sustained serious injuries.

“Our thoughts remain with the families affected who are being supported by specialist officers."

Staff at the Embellish hair salon said they were shocked to hear someone had lost their life as a result of the crash.

A spokesman said: “It’s so sad that someone has died.

“I’ve lived here for four years, and I’ve never seen an accident this bad.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the person.”

Two air ambulances were seen landing nearby and four fire engines were stationed on the road, with crews working to cut people out of the car.

A police cordon was set up between Hough Lane and Windsor Road.

A neighbour said: “I had hoped nobody would end up dying but the crash was so bad so it looked likely.

“It’s horrible what’s happened, and I hope that the family of the person who died are coping.

“This road can be very dangerous because people sometimes go too fast.”

Many shops closed early after the road was shut and said they were sorry to hear that someone had died.

A spokesman for A&A News said: “It’s a very sad incident and seems like it is not safe here and there should be more lights and crossings to make this road safer.

“It’s sad that someone had to lose their life.

“I was in the shop when it happened and the customers were telling me something had happened outside.”

Four fire engines from Bolton Central, Bolton North, and Farnworth fire stations were also at the scene.

A neighbour living nearby, said: “It’s not nice to hear that someone has died.

“I can’t imagine how their family must feel.

“I often walk my dog up and down this road and I do feel that there is a problem because the road is not straight.

"Something should be done about the speeding on this road as well."
