SAG Awards 2019: Everything You Need to Know About the 25th Annual Awards

The 2019 SAG Awards are coming up on Sunday, so we’re breaking down everything you need to know about the star-studded night.

What are the SAG Awards?

The 25th annual televised awards will honor the best achievements in film and television performances for the year 2018. The SAG Awards are a peer honor, with actors voting on who wins.

The show will present 15 awards total, including individual as well ensemble and cast performances.

How can I tune in?

The show will air live from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles on both TBS and TNT starting at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 27.

Who’s hosting?

Will & Grace star (and four-time SAG winner!) Megan Mullally will assume hosting duties this year, following in the footsteps of Kristen Bell, who was the show’s first-ever host in 2018.

“As a frustrated casting director and full-on fangirl of great actors everywhere, I’m over the moon to be a part of the SAG Awards 25th Anniversary,” said Mullally, 60, in a statement.

• The official pre-show, People, Entertainment Weekly and TNT Red Carpet Live: 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, will livestream beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT on PEOPLE.com, EW.com, tntdrama.com/sag-awards and sagawards.org, in addition to being broadcast live in Times Square.

Who are the nominees?

Nominations are decided upon by special SAG Awards committees. This year, Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Emma Stone scored big, with each actress nabbing two nominations each. Adams got nods for HBO’s Sharp Objects and her supporting turn in Vice.

Blunt made the cut in both the supporting and leading actress categories for her performances in A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins Returns, respectively. Stone received a surprise nomination on the TV side for her work in Maniac, as well as a supporting actress in a movie nod for The Favourite along with costar Rachel Weisz.

A Star Is Born once again racked up nominations and led with four, with Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Sam Elliott receiving nominations in the acting categories.

Additionally, Alan Alda, who reigned on TV for 11 years in the iconic role of womanizing Korean War surgeon Hawkeye Pierce on CBS’s hit series M*A*S*H, will receive the Life Achievement Award.

What are some of the snubs and surprises?

Most notable is Regina King, favored to be a frontrunner for the best supporting actress Oscar for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk. She was shut out of the equivalent race at the SAG Awards. Her acclaimed film, from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, didn’t receive a single nomination.

Her category was full of shockers, including Margot Robbie for her role as Queen Elizabeth in Mary Queen of Scots, which hadn’t received much awards love up until now.

A lot of actors from the same shows and movies will find themselves competing against each other thanks to some unexpected nominations. Battles include surprise nominee Julia Garner facing off against her Ozark costar Laura Linney in the best actress for a drama series category; Grace and Frankie‘s Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin going head-to-head in the comedy equivalent; Weisz against Stone for The Favourite; The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein; and Sharp Objects‘ Adams vs. Patricia Clarkson.

Amongst the male nominees, Rami Malek continues to build buzz for playing Freddie Mercury by scoring a best actor nod, despite the cool critical reception to Bohemian Rhapsody.

One the biggest shocks, no doubt, is Bohemian Rhapsody beating out The Favourite in the best ensemble category, despite The Favourite scoring three nominations for its cast.

And A Star Is Born‘s Bradley Cooper was snubbed in the best director category.

Who were the winners last year?

In 2018, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, This Is Us, Veep, and Big Little Lies were among the big SAG Awards winners.

Three Billboards was a repeat winner in the film categories, earning a best actress award for Frances McDormand, a supporting actor trophy for Sam Rockwell and the award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture — the SAG Awards equivalent of best picture.

On the TV side, Big Little Lies took home the limited series awards: best actor and best actress for Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman, respectively. This Is Us earned a best actor in a TV drama award for Sterling K. Brown, the first black actor to win in that category, as well as best ensemble in a TV drama. Veep won the award for best comedy, and its star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the award for best comedy actress.
