SAG winners: Oldman and McDormand tipped for Oscars

Gary Oldman and Frances McDormand were the big winners at the SAG awards, confirming odds they will triumph at the Oscars.

Oldman won the Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, in a ceremony celebrating "silence breakers" who spoke out about sexual harassment.

"You have your moment in the sun, there's no guarantee that you're going to keep working. God forbid, I could get sick, I could get hit by a car," Oldman said.

"We have today but there's no guarantee we're going to get tomorrow.

"So my feeling is: enjoy the moment in the sun, it will eclipse, it always does, and it will be someone else standing up here next year. I'm enjoying it."

The big winner of the ceremony was Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which picked up best ensemble and saw McDormand and Sam Rockwell win best actress and best supporting actor respectively.

"Frances, you're a powerhouse," Rockwell said accepting the award.

"I stand shoulder to shoulder with you and all the incredible women in this room who are trying to make things better. It's long overdue."

Just like the Globes, Allison Janney won best supporting actress for playing Tonya Harding's mother in I, Tonya.

On the TV side, HBO's Big Little Lies picked up best actor in a miniseries wins for both Alexander Skarsgard and Nicole Kidman.

"I'm so grateful today that our careers can go beyond 40 years old," Kidman said in her acceptance speech.

"We are potent and powerful and viable. I just beg that the industry stays behind us because our stories are finally being told."

Both James Franco and Aziz Ansari, who have been accused of sexual misconduct, lost their respective categories.

Franco lost to Oldman and Ansari to William H Macy, who was awarded for best male performance in a TV comedy for Shameless.

The Crown's Claire Foy won best female actor in a drama series for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II. She and Oldman were the only two Brits up for an award.

Morgan Freeman was handed the Lifetime achievement award and made a joke about the green statuette's gender.

"I'm gonna tell you what's wrong with this statue," he said.

"From the back it works, from the front it's gender specific. Maybe I started something."

The SAG Awards are a reliable predictor of the Oscars, and this year's show comes two days before The Academy announces its nominees.
