Sainsbury's and Co-op shoppers have been urged to return products as an urgent "do not eat" warning is issued. Sainsbury's and the Co-op are two of the biggest supermarkets in the country, rivalled by the likes of Tesco, Lidl, Asda, Aldi, Morrisons and more.

Two food items sold at Sainsbury’s have been recalled over fears they could pose a risk to anyone with a peanut allergy. "No other products have been affected by this issue. Sainsbury’s would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused." Co-op, meanwhile, has removed an item from its shelves over fears it may be contaminated with salmonella and a disease-causing bacteria linked to meningitis.

The Sainsbury's warning has been issued over Yorkshire Provender Jacket & Toast Topper Mexican Inspired Lentil Chilli and Yorkshire Provender Jacket & Toast Topper Haricot Beans in a Spicy Tomato Sauce. Shoppers are being told not to eat them if they have a peanut allergy but to return the items to a Sainsbury’s store where a refund will be given.

The supermarket says in its warning notice: "Sainsbury’s have been made aware that Hain Celestial Group is announcing a voluntary recall of Yorkshire Provender Jacket & Toast Topper Mexican Inspired Lentil Chilli and Yorkshire Provender Jacket & Toast Topper Haricot Beans in a Spicy Tomato Sauce because the chili flakes in the soup topping may contain undeclared peanut residue. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may be at risk if they consume these products.

"If you have purchased one of the affected products with these codes and you suffer from an intolerance to peanuts, please do not eat it. Instead, please return the product to any Sainsburys store for a full refund or contact the consumer services team at consumercare@haindaniels.com / 0800 0014409."

The Co-op is recalling its Co-op Smooth Brussels Pate because of the contamination risk. The affected products come in packs of 175g and have best before dates of November 19, November 21 and November 28.
