Sainsbury's has warned shoppers and customers over a £85 fine for breaking a new 90-minute parking rule. Signs at one store in the North West of England have sparked fury among loyal customers who've shared snaps of new signs in the car park.

One Facebook user warned: "HEADS UP… Sainsbury's Whitehouse Farm at Bishopton Road have just started installing these signs, if you read the small print under the 4 hours, you get 90 minutes on match days. So Stockton town supporters need to be aware of this…

"Just in time for the big game on Saturday against Oldham. Don’t get caught out as there will be wardens." A second typed: "Love to see how it can be enforced about the “match day” restriction.. What is the definition of a “match day”? I don’t see one. Men’s First team games? Women’s? U7s? U11s? Doesn’t mention Stockton Town FC either, many other football clubs play locally."

"Shocking considering how much money they make out of match days. Away supporters want beers for the journey home and other things," another reasoned. Another said: "They get plenty of business from the football supporters that is a rotten trick. All that will happen is that supporters will park in streets in Whitehouse farm estate causing more problems."

Another typed: "I think they're cutting their noses off to spite the face, the match day people will spend money in there either before the match or after for the journey home. I have never been there to shop, and not been able to park. There are always enough spaces even on match day."

"Fair play to Sainsbury’s, they’ll want to ensure that their customers can get parked without non-customers using it. 90 minutes seems a fair. If it takes you longer than 90 minutes to get round then I wouldn’t bother applying for Supermarket Sweep….," another commented.

"We go shopping then to Senators for a meal so they will both loose out from now on. I've never ever seen that car park full or the shop to be honest. What's the problem. Support local shops they say!" another wrote in response.
