Sam Smith Taking A Break From Social Media Following Oscars Row With Dustin Lance Black

Following the Oscars fallout and an eventful few days, Sam Smith has quit Twitter.

The drama kicked off on Sunday night after Dustin Lance Black accused him of texting his fiancé Tom Daly – maybe he was just having a lonely hour?

However, the 23-year old singer faced further backlash for his acceptance speech (video above) when picking up the Oscar for ‘Best Song’ for his vocals on the theme tune to the James Bond movie Spectre.

While showing his gratitude, he inaccurately claimed that he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar.

He started: “I read an article… by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar.”

Then added: “I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.

"I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day.”

This caused Dustin, who on an Oscar in 2009 for his film Milk, to tweet Sam and remind him that – he too – had won an award.

In response, the soulful singer apologised for the mix-up and explained to his fans that he was standing up for LGBT communities.

Later, Black backpedaled faster than we could run forward by claiming that it was all a joke.

However, the British singer didn’t seem to see the funny side and had obviously had enough of the online drama, as he tweeted to his 4.16 million Twitter followers that he would be logging off for a while.
