Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott unrecognisable as confused fans double take at 'weird announcement'

Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott went incognito as they showed off their Halloween costumes days after the festivities - or at least they would haev been incognito if they'd decided to go out with their new appearances.

The couple, who started dating back in 2019, are often sharing glimpses of their lives on social media and are no strangers to taking part in a TikTok trend, filming couple skits or just giving a glimpse into how they're spending their days.

In their latest update, Sam and Zara looked completely unrecognisable as they belatedly showed off their Halloween outfits, with Zara going all out as Shrek while Sam dressed as the ogre character's much-loved companion Donkey.

Former Love Island and Strictly Come Dancing star Zara covered her face and neck in green paint before sporting the film's title character's trademark outfit, complete with a larger belly and ogre ears.

Meanwhile, I'm A Celebrity winner Sam looked his usually happy self as he transformed into the fun-loving Donkey, opting for a skin-tight silver bodysuit with furry hands and legs warmers before adding a headband complete with donkey ears, nose and teeth.

Captioning the post, which featured two pictures of their impressive costume efforts, Sam wrote: "We did all of that to end up sitting on the sofa and handing out sweets…the dedication on Zara."

And it appears Zara was really unrecognisable as she wrote in the comments section of her boyfriend's Instagram post: "Not me running up to @edbezzant in the street shouting “GET OUT OF MY SWAMP” and him not even registering it was me for a whole 2 minutes."

But fans, meanwhile, had quite a chaotic response to the update. @chloe.d.stevens said: "For a moment I thought this was a really weird pregnancy announcement." @amyhodges95 echoed: "I thought this was a pregnancy announcement and I expect nothing less if and when the time comes."

@beautyslice commented: "I’m not sure @samthompsonuk would be allowed out in public with those leggings on!" @cru.3lla wrote: "Absolute icons, always look forward to your halloween costumes and you definitely didn't fail this year." @littlebrightonian added: "'Oh, this is gonna be fun! We can stay up late, swapping manly stories, and in the morning… I’m making waffles!'"
