San Diego Firefighters Battle Blaze and Explosion on USS Bonhomme Richard

Several injuries were reported after a three-alarm fire broke out on the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego in California on July 12, according to the San Diego Fire Department.

An explosion during the fire injured one person, the SDFD said. The department said they treated “several” sailors for a “variety of injuries” on the scene.

The US Naval Surface Forces later said 18 sailors were taken to a hospital for “non-life threatening injuries.”

Two nearby vessels, the USS Fitzgerald and USS Russell, were moved away from the burning ship, according to NSF.
