Note: This article contains spoilers for Sanditon's series 1 finale.

ITV won't be bringing back Sanditon for a second series, the broadcaster confirmed earlier today (December 11).

The eight-part drama, based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel of the same name, sadly didn't get the green light to finish the story of Austen's heroic character Charlotte Heywood.

The cancellation was confirmed by Radio Times, with an ITV spokesperson telling the publication: "We loved Sanditon and we were very proud to have it on ITV.

"We would have loved it to return, but unfortunately we just didn't get the audience that would make that possible for us, which is heartbreaking for everybody involved in this wonderful adaptation."

Saying that, there is a way for a second series. The spokesperson added: "Sanditon is yet to air in the US and we hope they may find a way of continuing with this series."

The show's writer Andrew Davies previously told Radio Times that their colleagues across the pond "are very keen" to pick up the adaptation for a potential season 2.

The ITV drama followed the story of young Charlotte (Rose Victoria Williams) who fell in love with the charming Sidney Parker (Downton Abbey's Theo James) after she arrived at the seaside resort of Sanditon.

Sadly (spoilers ahead), the two characters didn't get their happily ever after (despite previously admitting their feelings for each other) as they went their separate ways.

Sidney and Charlotte's love story came to an end when Sydney left to marry Eliza Campion, who he didn't really love.

Sanditon aired on ITV.
