ITV aired the series finale of Sanditon tonight (October 13), giving viewers a chance to found out how writer Andrew Davies brought his adaptation of Jane Austen's unfinished novel to a close.

Opening with the Midsummer Ball, the final episode saw the majority of romantic storylines resolved.

However, it wasn't to be a happy ending for Charlotte Heywood and Sidney Parker who, after finally admitting their feelings for each other, ended up going their separate ways.

In the finale's emotional closing scene, viewers were given one last hope for Sidney and Charlotte as he stopped her carriage on its way out of Sanditon. But it was not to be as he reluctantly agreed to honour his word and marry Eliza Campion, a woman he admits he doesn't love.

Viewers were devastated not to see the series come to a happy conclusion, and many of them furiously pointed out that Austen would never have ended things in such a way.

One viewer tweeted: "Jane Austen would never have written that ending for her heroine. What was Andrew Davies thinking?"

While another wrote: "What the hell! @ITV this is not how it should have ended! It's not very Jane Austen! Gutted and annoyed! Please say there is going to be a second series."

A second series of Sanditon hasn't yet been but confirmed, but that's where viewers will be hoping to find their happy ending.

Sanditon aired on ITV.
