Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds singing happy birthday to Betty White is a joy trifecta

File this under “things you never knew you needed but now can’t imagine living without.” Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds sang “Happy Birthday” to Betty White in honor of her 98th birthday, and we cannot remember the last time we felt such pure, unadulterated joy. It’s a Proposal reunion!

Reynolds posted the video on Instagram today, January 17th. It opens with Reynolds and Bullock alternately singing “Happy Birthday,” and devolves into a delightful battle of love.

“From Sandy, who loves you more than Ryan,” Sandra says. Cut to Reynolds, who replies: “From Ryan, who loves you *so* much more than Sandy. What does Sandy do for you every year? Does she show up and hand-deliver flowers to you wearing nothing but black socks and a dozen gold bracelets, just like you requested? I doubt it.”

White had a truly memorable cameo as Reynolds’ character’s grandmother in the 2009 rom-com The Proposal, with Bullock as the other half of the central couple. Perhaps even more delightful than this ad-hoc reunion is that we now know Mariah Carey is a big Proposal fan, per her comment on Reynolds’ post.

Mariah, you are invited to our rom-com marathons anytime. Honestly, we’re overjoyed that the trifecta has kept up their friendship over the past 11 years—though it’s not the first time we’ve seen the lasting bond between Bullock and White.

Like Reynolds, White got her own good-natured digs in on Bullock when she accepted a the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bullock introduced White as she accepted the award. When it was White’s time to talk, she quipped of Sandra, “Isn’t it heartening to see how far a girl as plain as she is can go?”

You love to see it.

Over the past 11 years since The Proposal, White has certainly kept herself busy. Most recently, she lent her voice to 2019’s Toy Story 4 as the toy tiger Bitey White. And in 2018, she was the subject of the PBS documentary Betty White: First Lady of Television, which honors the actor’s 80 years in show business. (That’s the longest career in the history of television, BTW.) She’s also made a handful of cameos over the past few years on shows like Community, Hot in Cleveland, Bones, Young & Hungry, and SpongeBob SquarePants (seriously).

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the next decade will see White, Bullock, and Reynolds reuniting for a Proposal sequel or a whole new rom-com adventure. In the meantime, we’ll have to appease ourselves with this adorable tribute video.
