Saoirse Ronan has revealed life on set of the latest adaptation of Little Women was far from genteel — with the cast “wrestling” one another and cracking “filthy jokes”.

The actress plays Jo March in the forthcoming Greta Gerwig-directed adaptation of the classic novel written by Louisa May Alcott.

The all-star cast includes Laura Dern as matriarch Marmee, with the March sisters Meg, Amy and Beth played by Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen respectively.

Ronan revealed details of life on set in the winter edition of Dazed magazine.

The 25-year-old said: “Me and the girls, as soon as we met, we just clicked. The way we all were with each other, we were like boys. Wrestling all the time.

“No, actually, we were like girls because that’s exactly what girls do but we wrestled all the time.” She added: “And we were always telling these filthy jokes. It was just this amazing energy that existed between all of us straight away.

"One of the things I like about acting is the relationships you can form when you’re working.”

The actress was nominated for an Oscar for Gerwig’s 2017 coming-of-age drama Ladybird, in which her character had a difficult relationship with her mother.

Ronan said the bond between Jo and Marmee in Little Women was very different: “In Ladybird, they are at each other’s throats the whole time, but this is a love affair between the mother and the daughter. It felt the most like my relationship with my mum that I’ve ever experienced on a film set.”

Dazed winter edition is on sale Thursday, November 21. Little Women is out on Friday, December 21.
