Today, we should've been donning our hats and sipping on bubbles in celebration of Princess Beatrice's wedding. The ninth-in-line to the throne was supposed to marry Italian property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a ceremony at St. James’s Palace, followed by a reception in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. But alas, coronavirus has seen to postponing the festivities.

After getting engaged in September 2019, the royal family confirmed the wedding date was set for 29 May, but in March this year the couple said their wedding plans were 'under review' thanks to the pandemic. A month later, in April, it was confirmed the wedding was off for the foreseeable, with a spokesperson telling People magazine: "There are no plans to switch venues or hold a bigger wedding. They aren’t even thinking about their wedding at this time. There will come a time to rearrange, but that’s not yet."

But while today might be tinged with sadness for Princess Beatrice and her fiancé, it seems they're surrounded by the love and support of their friends and family. Over on Instagram, Beatrice's mum Sarah Ferguson posted some sweet words of comfort for her eldest daughter on what should have been her wedding day.

Alongside a sweet picture of the Princess as a child, Sarah wrote: "Love you my darling Beatrice. You have given me more joy than I could ever wish for. I am so excited to celebrate yours and Edo’s love when we all are out of lockdown."

The post continued, with Sarah Ferguson optimistically reminding Beatrice: "The most important thing is health and love and today I send it to you and all the other people that were getting married during this time .. so proud of you all".

Awww, isn't that lovely.

So many other couples around the world have had to deal with the disappointment of seeing their would-have-been wedding date come and go, but with the health of so many at stake, it's important social distancing continues.

As of yet, there's no rescheduled date for Beatrice and Edo, but when it does eventually come around we'll be glass in hand, ready to celebrate.
