On Tuesday, beauty editor and author Cait Kiernan shared a video to TikTok addressing a recent photo of the actress out for brunch with Andy Cohen, rocking her grey hair and a bare face.
Kiernan praised the 56-year-old "Sex and the City" actress for embracing her age and avoiding the ongoing societal pressures for women to appear ageless. Kiernan told viewers she was "blown away" by the candid photo of the star "and not for the reasons you think."
"We need to discuss," Kiernan said. "If you are a woman over 40 in this country, you know how hard it is to age gracefully. It's not that we don't try, but society has some steep expectations of us."
Kiernan went on to explain how women over the age of 40 "are expected to look" like they're in their 20s and 30s indefinitely.
"It's only reinforced by magazines, TV shows, and movies. It's bullsh— and exhausting," she said.
Kiernan said she was "floored" by the photo of Parker "rocking her grey hair" and minimal makeup.
"Finally, a celebrity who has a huge platform, using it to create a healthy narrative around aging as women in America," she explained.
Kiernan added that she often feels disappointed when female celebrities opt for plastic surgery, instead of leaning into their age.
"Nothing bums me out more than when a celebrity I've long admired starts to feel the pressure to remain youthful, and they start doing crazy stuff," she explained. "They become almost unrecognizable. I'm sure you can think of a few. That's why when I saw the picture of SJP, I thought, 'Damn! This is one badass b——."
Kiernan's video was met with more than 550,000 views, and countless supportive comments agreeing with the message.
One person pointed out that Parker's longtime friend and Bravo executive, Andy Cohen, is fully grey, but no one seems to bat an eye at that.
"The man beside her is totally grey and no one says anything," they wrote.
"We need to start looking at aging in a different light," someone else wrote. "We earned the wrinkles and grey hair through years of hardship and laughter."
