For parents and guardians, children's milestone birthdays can be an emotional affair, and that certainly seems to be the case for Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker, whose eldest child has turned 18.

James Wilkie, who Sarah shares with her husband Matthew Broderick, was born on 28 October 2002, meaning he's now celebrating his 18th birthday.

To mark the occasion, actor Sarah shared a sweet tribute to her son on social media, accompanied by throwback pictures of him as a small child.

Sarah wrote:

"My beloved son, James Wilkie,
On this day, you are 18 years old.
I marvel at the passing of those years
but equally the young man you are becoming.
My love for you is an ache and an honor.
As you leap toward and into your future,
I remain your privileged and steadfast confident and joyful witness to the year ahead.
Happy birthday my first time voter.
I love you so.
X,
Mama."

Sarah and Matthew also share twin daughters Marion and Tabitha, who were born in 2009.

As alluded to in her touching post in celebration of James' birthday, Sarah is open about the trials and tribulations of parenting.

She previously told Girlboss Radio: "You’re in a constant state of worrying about your children. It’s very painful and it’s exhilarating. It’s a really interesting way of living in the world."

We're sure the family is very much enjoying the exhilarating at present, as they celebrate their eldest son's birthday.
