Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has publicly apologised after coming under fire for posting a racy lingerie shot on her Instagram account alongside a caption reminding herself not to overeat during the American holiday Thanksgiving.

The 41-year-old American actress posted a very sultry picture on her official account, which boasts over two million followers, with the caption “I’m just going to pin these up all over my house as a reminder not to overeat on Thursday #thanksgivingprep.”

While many users praised Gellar’s pictures, some accused it of promoting unhealthy body image and even fat shaming.

Among the complaints included one Instagram user who replied with, “protruding hip bones and visible ribs aren’t cute. Never have been. Never will be” while another wrote “Projecting the idea that we should restrict ourselves from eating food to be skinny is a dangerous and damaging mindset which clearly plagues the minds of many, including celebrities as it’s pretty apparent here.”

While a third complained, “This caption proves once more that diet culture is really everywhere and that so many women have internalized this kind of thinking. It’s really a shame.”

Gellar has responded to the backlash with a published apology which states:

“It’s come to my attention that some people think I was ‘fat shaming’ with this post. That could not be further from my intentions.

“I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to myself not to do that.”

“I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humor. Anyone that knows me, knows I would never intentionally “shame” any one on any basis. I am a champion of all people,” she wrote.

Gellar is mostly known for starring in the cult show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and movies such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Grudge. She is married to fellow actor Freddie Prince Junior, and they have two children, Charlotte, 9, and Rocky, 6.
