Satellite Shows 'Bookend' Hurricanes Off US Coasts
Two hurricanes on opposite sides of the US continued their development in the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, respectively, on Thursday, September 8, NOAA satellite footage shows.
Hurricane Earl in the Atlantic was traveling north and was forecast to pass east of Bermuda as a Category 3 storm, bringing tropical storm conditions to the island on Thursday, the NOAA said.
Across the country, Hurricane Kay by Thursday morning was off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, where the NOAA said a hurricane warning was in effect.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) said the footage of the “bookend” hurricanes also shows “a sharp delineation down the central US where wildfire smoke is suppressing cumulus cloud development to the west.” Credit: NOAA via Storyful
