Lionsgate has given Saw 8 a brand new title ahead of its release this Halloween.

Saw: Legacy is now called Jigsaw which, fact fans, was the original working title for the very first movie in the horror franchise way back in 2004.

The movie started production last October and is directed by Peter and Michael Spierig, who made half-decent chillers Predestination and Daybreakers, with Gregg Hoffman and Oren Koules returning to the franchise as producers.

Jigsaw is also, of course, the nickname of the main villain of the series, John Kramer (Tobin Bell) – a character who actually died in Saw III, but has appeared in flashbacks since and will likely appear in the new movie.

"Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer," the official synopsis reads.

"But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?"

Jigsaw was written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger who have previously written Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD and Sorority Row.

It stars Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Boisvert and James Gomez.

Jigsaw will be released in UK cinemas on October 20 and US cinemas on October 27.
