Scarlett Moffatt: Tribes people loved my fat rolls

Scarlett Moffatt has revealed how living with a remote Nimibian tribe boosted her confidence and made her feel more comfortable in her own skin.

The 29-year-old Gogglebox star spent a month living with her family in a replica of their house built next to a Himba community in the southern African country, for controversial new show The British Tribe Next Door.

Moffatt told This Morning: “I just felt no judgement there. My friends there, and this sounds really offensive, but they kept saying ‘We wish we had your rolls of fat.’ And if my friends at home said that I would be really offended. But they were saying ‘You look strong, it looks like your dad’s cattle are healthy.’ I’ve never felt… so happy to be in my own skin.”

She added: “And it doesn’t sound like a big thing, but even on shows now I’m getting the tops of my arms out. It doesn’t sound like a big thing, but it’s a good step forward.”

The TV presenter and former I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! Queen of the Jungle admitted she had expected the tribes people to be impressed by their Western lifestyle and modern conveniences - when the opposite was true.

Moffatt revealed they had shown the Himba people mirrors for the first time.

She said: “The most amazing thing was that they all said they looked beautiful. And that was so touching. The chief did say ‘Who’s that old man?’ and we had to explain it was him!”

Moffatt added: “I feel like a lot of my day is consumed by how I look and you see your reflection and you look in it, and it’s just not a thing there.”

She also revealed that the house had been removed from Namibia and is being reused in South Africa, where it was built. The TV production left behind only a borehole providing access to clean water.
