Heavy thunderstorms swamped parts of South Florida on December 23, with some areas accumulating more than a foot of rainfall, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.
The NWS issued flood warnings in multiple counties, urging people not to drive or wade through floodwater. The weather service said there were “incredible” rainfall totals across South Florida, with eight to 10 inches collected in Hollywood by Monday morning.

The weather forced the closure of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for several hours as floodwater inundated roadways and rendered parts of the airport “inaccessible.” The airport said more than 100 flights were delayed and at least six were canceled by morning.
