The Chancellor, who was sent private text messages by David Cameron last year to ask for help for the finance firm, had been expected to explain how it was accredited for the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Scheme (CLBILS). It would have been the first time he had spoken in the chamber since March 9, more than a month ago. However, small business minister Paul Scully is appearing instead. Labour sources noted that Mr Sunak had only appeared once between the end of November and the Budget, dodging three Treasury questions. They added: "The Chancellor is happy to stand in front of a camera when it suits him, but won't answer questions about his involvement in the biggest lobbying scandal for a generation. What's he got to hide?" But a Treasury source explained “After a year of these schemes being in place and a very detailed letter last week setting out the difference between them, Labour still don’t get that CLBILS is not a Treasury lead.” Follow the latest updates below.

JK Rowling will release a new book with the publisher whose staff threatened to walk out over her stance on transgender issues. The author was criticised last year by members of the transgender community and Harry Potter cast members, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, for claiming women and biological sex were being “erased”. The subsequent release of her children's book The Ickabog through Hachette sparked an internal revolt at the publishing house, with some employees threatening to walk out over Rowling’s alleged transphobia, Now the author is set to publish another children’s title through the same firm, with The Christmas Pig due to be released in autumn. The story is described as a “heartwarming, page-turning adventure about one child’s love for his most treasured toy, and how far he will go to find it”. Rowling has classified The Ickabog as a “fairy tale”, and The Christmas Pig has therefore been billed as her first children’s novel since the Harry Potter series. Following controversy over the publication of Rowling’s work, Hachette last year said the house was “proud to publish” her writing. A statement from the house added: “Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of publishing. “We fundamentally believe that everyone has the right to express their own thoughts and beliefs. That’s why we never comment on our authors’ personal views and we respect our employees’ right to hold a different view.” Ms Rowling has denied being transphobic, and explained following the online outrage at her comments that her views on biological sex and the welfare of women stem from her own experience of domestic abuse.

Hot flows of ash, rock fragments and gas tore down the flanks of the La Soufriere volcano on the tiny Caribbean island of Saint Vincent on Monday after its most powerful explosion yet, four days after it first started erupting. La Soufriere erupted back into life on Friday after decades of inactivity, pumping dark clouds of ash some 10 km (6 miles) into the air and prompting an evacuation by sea and land of thousands of nearby residents. No deaths have been reported so far but a roughly a third of the island is off limits and airspace remains closed while power and water supply is intermittent in some communities.
