School closures amid flood warnings in West Midlands

Some schools have been closed amid flood warnings in the West Midlands. It comes as the Met Office issued an amber warning for heavy rainfall.

Torrential downpours are forecast between 1pm and 7pm today, Monday, September 23. Weather warnings are in place until midnight.

One Worcestershire school was forced to close for the day after suffering flood water damage inside the school building. It follows 35 schools which are impacted by industrial action across Birmingham today.

In a forecast for today, the Met Office said: "A cloudy and wet day, with light winds leading to prolonged downpours, at times heavy, perhaps thundery, and bringing a risk of flooding across the region. Drier spells arriving from the west by this evening, but remaining overcast. Maximum temperature 17C.

"Tonight: The band of heavy rain moves slowly eastwards overnight, with dry spells becoming more prolonged from the west. Still rather cloudy though, and feeling noticeably cooler than recent nights. Minimum temperature 10C.

"Tuesday: A cloudy but generally more settled day. Dry for most with some sunny spells, though some isolated showers spreading into northern Shropshire in the afternoon. Feeling cooler with northerly winds. Maximum temperature 16C.

"Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Becoming wet and windy later this week, with low pressure arriving from the southwest on Wednesday and Thursday. Sunshine and showers on Friday, and turning cooler in a northerly wind."

Schools closed for non-strike reasons:

  • Bewdley Primary School shut due to flood water damage inside school building

  • Brockton School shut due to disruption to the water supply and no water on site

  • William Brookes, Much Wenlock (Academy), closed due to a boiler failure
